WFCDC Weekly Pulse: June 8th, 2020

A big THANK YOU to everyone who attended or otherwise supported the “I Can’t Breathe” marches downtown on Friday! Hundreds showed up with energy, outrage, love, & solidarity (and face masks!) for Black Lives Matter; including our Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton. Protests in the small towns matter because they signify that real change is occurring — and it’s so encouraging to be able to say that Winchester is solidly a part of this movement.

Want ensure that the momentum doesn’t end after the protests stop & the hastag is no longer trending?

What happened to George Floyd (and to Christian Cooper, in the same week) is not surprising. Part of continuing the momentum includes reflecting on all parts of this country’s history & how it’s shaped your own privilege today, and having uncomfortable conversations about it with people in your life. Here is a guide of what to say when people deny the reality of what’s happening right now (and maybe even to interrogate some of your own instincts & reactions) (source for parts 1 & 2):

These protests are about so much more than George Floyd, or even police brutality.

They also have widespread support, and it’s not just all 50 states that are showing up in large numbers — the movement is happpening all around the world, too.

Protests change politics (thank you to Dave & Cathy for sending us the article!), and these are no different; even after one week, they are leading to change. This includes tearing down monuments to racist historical figures (including, but again not limited to, statues right here in Virginia!). We’ve been through this debate before in this presidency, but it’s worth remembering how and why so many Confederate monuments were erected in the first place (and why they’re physically so easy to topple).

Also worth remembering: last week saw trump issue an authoritarian threat to deploy the US military against its own citizens at protests, hide from DC residents in his bunker, and use tear gas to disperse protestors so he could awkwardly hold a bible (even though tear gas affects the body so much it is banned in war) — a move so aggregious even the church he used as a prop for the photo op spoke out against him.

In case there was any doubt over whether Biden would do something similar, here’s his response:

“You know, Barack and I never went down to the bunker. They tell me it had cobwebs from lack of use during our 8 years. Never actually seen the bunker. I called up Barack, he said he’s never seen it either.

We never had cause to use the bunker. We were never that scared. Barack always told me that if there was an emergency and it was time to go to the bunker, that he would send only me, as VP, in case anything went wrong.

He, as president, would remain with the people of this nation during any troubling times. He would never have abandoned them.”

HE FLED HIS DUTY.  First, he evaded the draft.  Now, he flees the duties of the office he holds, that of President of the United States.  This opinion piece goes into the sad details.  Warning!  The face that appears when you load that page is horrifying.

HOW TO SUPPORT MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES.  You would think no Democrat needs such guidance, but we all need reminders for when we fail.  This article gives good guidance and it doesn’t matter what the marginalized community may be.  It also holds good if you are a member of a marginalized community since there is far more than one, regretfully.

DECADES OF MEDICAL MISINFORMATION.  It didn’t start with COVID-19.  For decades, trump consistently has spewed out medial misinformation.  Read about it here.

MAKE COVID-19 RECOVERY GREEN.  That is what over than 200 top UK firms and investors asked their government do, per this article.  Would be a good idea here, too.

QUOTE:  This is an awful man, waving a book he hasn’t read, in front of a church he doesn’t attend, invoking laws he doesn’t understand, against fellow Americans he sees as enemies, wielding a military he dodged serving, to protect power he gained via accepting foreign interference, exploiting fear and anger he loves to stoke, after failing to address a pandemic he was warned about, and building it all on a bed of constant lies and childish inanity.  ~  Robert Hendrickson, Rector at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Tucson, Arizona

BATTERY GAME CHANGER.  Researchers have created a sodium-ion battery that works as well as most lithium-ion batteries.  It’s good for environment and economy.  Read about it here.

8 REVEALING WORDS.  That’s all it took for Mitch McConnell to define republicans’ total complicity with trump, per this article and video.

GOTTERDAMMERUNG.  Are we in it?  In this case meaning the final phase of the trump era?  Read this opinion piece for details.

WE ARE ANTI-FASCISM.  This isn’t antifa, it’s different.  Read about it here.  Note that Business Insider doesn’t like ad blockers, so you may have to work around that.

JOKE.  Why did the chicken cross the road?  To pose for a blasphemous photo op at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

QUOTE:  The pursuit of life is not to be happy.  It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you lived and lived well.  ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

A HISTORY OF “LAW AND ORDER”.  It is a sad history and not as long as you may think, but you can read about it here.

FUN!  Yes, it is time for a little fun!  How about a score of giant teddy bears riding a roller coaster?  Yes, for real, no cartoon.  See the short video here.

VOTER REGISTRATION FRAUD.  That is what trump attempted when he tried to register to vote in Florida while claiming his legal residence is in Washington, DC.  This tells more.

HUMOR.  For your listening pleasure, try these three music videos:  BIG BAD DON, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY (trump version), and ALL ABOUT HIS BASE.

THE BOOGALOO THREAT.  Yep, there is one and the police call their actions unlawful.  Their objective?  They want another civil war and they show up armed to the teeth.  Read more about them here.

HIS FAVORITE BIBLE STORIES.  We know how religious trump really is.  Read this to know his favorite Bible stories.  You’ll get a good laugh!

NEW VOICE IN TOWN!  Yes, there is a new news media voice in Winchester and it is Winchester Progressive News.  Check it out here.

HE BUILT ANOTHER WALL.  This time, it is a barrier between the People and the People’s House.  Read about it here.

A TALE OF TWO CHURCH VISITS.  I suspect you will agree with this opinion piece.

RANKING THE VP CHOICES.  Each of us have our opinion of who Biden should select as his running mate.  This article reflects the opinion of its author, not necessarily that of Biden or the party as a whole.

FAMILY DISCORD.  While trump calls for violence to end demonstrations, his wife is tweeting for peace.  Read about it here.

DC’S BLM.  16th Street, NW, in Washington, DC, has a new paint job.  In letters two lanes high, it now bears the words “Black Lives Matter”.  It is a street leading to the White House.  Read more about it here and enjoy the photos.

WHAT IF HE WINS … OR LOSES?  Come November, we will hold an election.  How will trump react to the outcome?  Here is a well thought out look at the possibilities and they may not be all that you think.
