A big THANK YOU to everyone who attended or otherwise supported the “I Can’t Breathe” marches downtown on Friday! Hundreds showed up with energy, outrage, love, & solidarity (and face masks!) for Black Lives Matter; including our Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton. Protests in the small towns matter because they signify that real change is occurring — and it’s so encouraging to be able to say that Winchester is solidly a part of this movement.
Want ensure that the momentum doesn’t end after the protests stop & the hastag is no longer trending?
- Two local & well-deserving organizations to check out are the I’m Just Me Movement and Arte Libre
- Two blogs to read are ACEs Connection and “Resilience Week: Winchester Area Trauma -Informed Community Network”
- blacklivesmatters.carrd.co and lectureinprogress.com have compiled & organized a lot of different ways you can help — from donations to things to read to petitions
- If you’ve got kids in your life, prettygooddesign.org has compiled resources for talking with children (of all ages) about race
- And finally, see Wednesday’s edition of the PULSE for a longer list of resources to support the cause
What happened to George Floyd (and to Christian Cooper, in the same week) is not surprising. Part of continuing the momentum includes reflecting on all parts of this country’s history & how it’s shaped your own privilege today, and having uncomfortable conversations about it with people in your life. Here is a guide of what to say when people deny the reality of what’s happening right now (and maybe even to interrogate some of your own instincts & reactions) (source for parts 1 & 2):
These protests are about so much more than George Floyd, or even police brutality.
They also have widespread support, and it’s not just all 50 states that are showing up in large numbers — the movement is happpening all around the world, too.

Protests change politics (thank you to Dave & Cathy for sending us the article!), and these are no different; even after one week, they are leading to change. This includes tearing down monuments to racist historical figures (including, but again not limited to, statues right here in Virginia!). We’ve been through this debate before in this presidency, but it’s worth remembering how and why so many Confederate monuments were erected in the first place (and why they’re physically so easy to topple).
Also worth remembering: last week saw trump issue an authoritarian threat to deploy the US military against its own citizens at protests, hide from DC residents in his bunker, and use tear gas to disperse protestors so he could awkwardly hold a bible (even though tear gas affects the body so much it is banned in war) — a move so aggregious even the church he used as a prop for the photo op spoke out against him.
In case there was any doubt over whether Biden would do something similar, here’s his response:
“You know, Barack and I never went down to the bunker. They tell me it had cobwebs from lack of use during our 8 years. Never actually seen the bunker. I called up Barack, he said he’s never seen it either.
We never had cause to use the bunker. We were never that scared. Barack always told me that if there was an emergency and it was time to go to the bunker, that he would send only me, as VP, in case anything went wrong.
He, as president, would remain with the people of this nation during any troubling times. He would never have abandoned them.”
HE FLED HIS DUTY. First, he evaded the draft. Now, he flees the duties of the office he holds, that of President of the United States. This opinion piece goes into the sad details. Warning! The face that appears when you load that page is horrifying.
HOW TO SUPPORT MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES. You would think no Democrat needs such guidance, but we all need reminders for when we fail. This article gives good guidance and it doesn’t matter what the marginalized community may be. It also holds good if you are a member of a marginalized community since there is far more than one, regretfully.
DECADES OF MEDICAL MISINFORMATION. It didn’t start with COVID-19. For decades, trump consistently has spewed out medial misinformation. Read about it here.
MAKE COVID-19 RECOVERY GREEN. That is what over than 200 top UK firms and investors asked their government do, per this article. Would be a good idea here, too.
QUOTE: This is an awful man, waving a book he hasn’t read, in front of a church he doesn’t attend, invoking laws he doesn’t understand, against fellow Americans he sees as enemies, wielding a military he dodged serving, to protect power he gained via accepting foreign interference, exploiting fear and anger he loves to stoke, after failing to address a pandemic he was warned about, and building it all on a bed of constant lies and childish inanity. ~ Robert Hendrickson, Rector at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Tucson, Arizona
